Cirque du Soleil
I saw Cirque du Soleil - Corteo last night at Randall's Island; my cousin called me right as I got home from work and said he had an extra ticket. I had never seen a Cirque du Soleil show before and naturally, I was pretty excited.

Hamas man killed, another wounded in shooting attacks
One Hamas member was killed and another was wounded in two separate shooting attacks Tuesday in the Gaza Strip, emergency workers said.
The motives for the shootings was unknown, and there was no immediate claim of responsibility. Gunmen from Hamas and Fatah have clashed in recent weeks in a power struggle for control of the Palestinian government following Hamas' victory in January parliamentary elections.
In Gaza City, Mohammed Tatar, 25, was walking down the street when he was shot twice in the head by unknown assailants. He was evacuated to the hospital where he died of his wounds, hospital officials said.

So it seems that Mexico is complaining about Bush's call to send National Guard troops to try and secure the border. What right to they have to complain? Unless they have evidence that U.S. troops are going to cross into Mexico, it's not of their business what we do with our troops within our own border.
If the U.S. wanted to, it could plant land mines all along the border, or dig huge canal and fill it with sharks, piranhas, and electric eels. Mexico has no say in the matter.

The President's Immigration Speech
I normally cringe when I watch Bush speak, but tonight was different. He was clear, he was articulate, and he finally had a decent speech to read. (I wonder if he got a new speechwriter?)
Bush is trying to hold the middle ground here, and I commend him for it. It was smart for him to start off with presenting border security as a basic right of a sovereign nation. It's not about keeping Mexicans out, it's about knowing who is coming in. I think that if we do a better shot of securing the border and grant incentives for coming here legally, then more people would be open to an amnesty program (yes it's an amnesty program, no matter how you spin it). If people truly, honestly believe that this is the last time the U.S. is going to legalize millions of illegals, then they will go along with it. But if it's just going to happen again in 20 years because we failed to secure the border, well, I for one am not going to like it.
I can continue, but I've got a final in 36 hours...

I guesss the NY Times watched a different speech than I did. But latlely, most of their editorials have sounded like the DailyKos, so it's possible that they are just nuts.

Someone Agrees With Me
Last week I wrote that I was not comfortable with giving the death penalty to Zacarias Moussaoui.
Now, this week Charles Krauthammer agrees with me.

Helping The Poor?
From today's NY Times on the latest Bush tax cuts:
Now that is what's wrong with Democrats and liberals. Oh no! Millionars have the right to earn money! Lots of money! Heaven forbid!
If millionares want to help the poor, don't you think they'd rather give to the charity of their choice instead of paying more in taxes?

"Now millionaires have the right to have all the money they can," Mr. Hastings said, his voice shaking. "But if you ask them, I believe that they want to share with the poor. I don't think that they want to see people pushed out into the streets."

1 Down, 3 To Go
So I just finished my ConLawII take home exam. This was the most poorly written exam I have ever taken, it's as if the professor didn't proofread what she wrote.
Example: The hypo says that "The State has instituted prosecution against....[the] commune for polyamory, violating the anti-abortion laws, and practicing medicine without a license...All those being prosecuted are raising constitutional defenses".
The problem is, the exam doesn't say what the anti-abortion laws are. So how do I discuss the constitutional issues of a law that I don't know anything about?
Ugh.

Universal Health Care?
DovBear last week asked for arguments against universal health care. I stayed out of the argument because everything that has been said on the matter has already been said. I haven't heard an original thought on the issue in a long time.
But if you need further proof that having in the government involved in health care is a bad idea, just look across the pond.

The Yarmulka Dilemma....Over For Now
Well, I can stop worrying if my yarmulka is going to hinder my chances of employment. ( See here, and here) I had a call back interview today a boutique corporate and securities law firm today, and they liked me so much, they gave me an offer right on the spot. Needless to say, I accepted. I start work as soon as finals are over. I have no idea if this will lead to full time employment once I graduate, but I'm still excited.
Now, the only question remains- do I continue with the suede yarmulka that I wore to the interview, or do I switch back to my regular velvet one. And if I switch, will anyone at work notice?

Illegals And The Civil Rights Movement
People are calling the illegal-immigrant rights movement the new civil rights movement. I think that's offensive, and apparently, many blacks aren't too thrilled with the idea either.
Blacks had every right to demand justice, to demand respect, and to demand their rights under the law. Their ancestors were kidnapped, taken to a foreign land, and enslaved. Americans had a moral duty to make things right, to given them rights that any other citizen has.
But illegals have no right to demand anything. They broke through our border and broke the law. They came here under their own free will. They can not demand citizenship with all its rights when every second they are here they are in violation of the law.
I'm not arguing in favor of mass deportations. It's not going to happen. There is going have to be some sort of compromise that will end up granting amnesty to many of them. But I would like if the illegals would show a little humility on their part. Ask for rights, don't demand it. Ask for citizenship, don't demand it. Reach out to the kindness of Americans- because we don't owe you anything.

The Moussaoui Verdict
So Moussaoui will live. I'm ok with that. Though I am a big supporter of the death penalty, I'm not sure it would have been appropriate here. I'm not comfortable with someone getting the death penalty for conspiracy. He didn't kill anyone. Yes, if he had talked it may have prevented 9/11, but then again, maybe not. That's not enough, IMHO to execute someone.

Finals Season
I've got a 15 page paper due on Friday (I've written about 5 pages so far), and four finals after that. Needless to say, blogging will be light until my my last final.
