Illegals And The Civil Rights Movement

People are calling the illegal-immigrant rights movement the new civil rights movement. I think that's offensive, and apparently, many blacks aren't too thrilled with the idea either.

Blacks had every right to demand justice, to demand respect, and to demand their rights under the law. Their ancestors were kidnapped, taken to a foreign land, and enslaved. Americans had a moral duty to make things right, to given them rights that any other citizen has.

But illegals have no right to demand anything. They broke through our border and broke the law. They came here under their own free will. They can not demand citizenship with all its rights when every second they are here they are in violation of the law.

I'm not arguing in favor of mass deportations. It's not going to happen. There is going have to be some sort of compromise that will end up granting amnesty to many of them. But I would like if the illegals would show a little humility on their part. Ask for rights, don't demand it. Ask for citizenship, don't demand it. Reach out to the kindness of Americans- because we don't owe you anything.

Never forget how many of our ancestors would have survived in the 1940's if they could have just violated america's oppresive immigration laws.

Sounds like you are making a great case for asylum, not a free for all for anyone who is facing tough economic times anywhere on the planet.
I'm a dyed in the wool, bleeding heart liberal.

I don't understand the issue at all. This isn't an anti-immigration issue, it's an anti-ILLEGAL immigration issue. I don't see why more people (including LEGAL immigrants) aren't more up in arms.

Also, there's a real easy conservative way to handle this through minor gov't intervention into the free market. Make it a serious felony, punishable by 25 years in a maximum security prison, for corporations to hire illegal immigrants. Make fines in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Tysons, Perdue, and the other big sources of jobs for illegals will stop once the first CEO gets fitted for an orange jumpsuit. The labor market dries up, and boom, all the illegal immigrants go back to whereever they came from.
I hear JDub's point, but that's pushing it. It's not the corporations that are drawing the immigrants over; though they should be punished for taking advantage once they are over.

Great post.
