Chutzpah

So it seems that Mexico is complaining about Bush's call to send National Guard troops to try and secure the border. What right to they have to complain? Unless they have evidence that U.S. troops are going to cross into Mexico, it's not of their business what we do with our troops within our own border.

If the U.S. wanted to, it could plant land mines all along the border, or dig huge canal and fill it with sharks, piranhas, and electric eels. Mexico has no say in the matter.

I've always heard that it's illegal to booby trap your property in order to harm or kill burglers. I don't see why this would be different.

Life's not as black and white as you'd like, CWY.
You're right in that a homeowner can't set up a trap just to protect his land, (Katko v. Briney), but I doubt that applies to the U.S. government.

Or if you wish, the government could build a gigantic wall along the entire border that's 100 feet tall and 100 feet deep. As long as it's on U.S. soil, I don't understand how Mexico has any right to complain.
Jewish Atheist: Governments do have the right to protect their borders with deadly force. There might be a moral objection to the use of land mines in this case, but I think CWY was purposely being hyperbolic (the bit about the electric eels tipped me off).

;-)
I don't disagree that the U.S. has the *right* to lock down the borders. Still, having the right to do something isn't the same as saying you should do something.
And why exactly shouldn't the U.S. secure its' border?
Well, obviously, there are tradeoffs. As you well know, the border's freakin' huge. Moreover, the overwhelming majority of the illegals aren't hurting our country. They're just people trying to make a life for themselves and their families. It just doesn't seem worth it to go to all that effort to keep out a bunch of people who aren't really doing much harm. And that goes double if our "solution" is to just keep wasting money by pretending to do something about it, as Bush seems to be suggesting we do.
Hey Jewish Atheist..so what you are saying is the fact that are jail system is overloaded with illeagal immigrants doesn't bother you? Do you have any idea how many criminals come through that border?
