A Conundrum

Ha'aretz is reporting that the Orthodox Jews of Monsey of trying to prevent Wal-Mart from opening up in their heilige shteeble. One of the reasons given is that they don't want the unwashed, uncircumcised masses coming into their town.

This obviously presents a problem to lefty OthoBloggers like DovBear. On one hand, everything that Wal-Mart does is wrong. On the other hand, everything that the Jews of Monsey do is wrong. Who do you root for?

I'm rooting for Wal-Mart. And it's not because I love Wal-Mart and everything that they stand for. This is a classic example of NIMBY, as anyone who has been to the Wal-Mart in Monticello during the summer knows, Orthodox Jews love to shop at Wal-Mart.

I couldn't agree with you more. The only thing that you may be overlooking though, is the fact that it may hurt many local jewish businesses, and many (good) people need the parnossa.
grickmeyer-have you shopped at the stores in monsey? unfortunately, they're often unhelpful and they DO NOT stand behind their merchandise. a certain shoe store which shall remain unnamed was having a sale, so one of my family members went there and bought a pair of shoes. a week later, the shoe was falling apart. the store manager said the shoes had been bought on sale, so couldn't be returned. i can tell you from experience that walmart will take anything back. even if you take off the tags, AND lose the receipt
