Does The Punishment Fit The Crime?
I’m all in favor of the death penalty. Bu even I’ll agree that this is ridiculous. Smuggle in heroin and your punishment is getting hung? Wow, that’s pretty strict. Though I wonder what the crime rate is in Singapore.

Singapore is really tough on crime. Isn't Singapore the place that metes out whipping for people who litter?
Singapore is one of the largest ports in the world and could very easily become a major drug port. The folks in Singapore take this sort of thing *extremely* seriously.
In any event, he knew what he was getting into. From what I understand, every immigration form that you have to sign to enter the country tells you that you will be executed for drug possession. There are signs all over the airports in multiple languages that you will be executed for drug possession. Singapore has executed hundreds of people in the last few years for drug possession/distribution. He took his chances, was caught and now will pay the penalty.
Would I rather he not be executed? Sure. Do I think that the punishment is excessive? Yes. But he knew what he was getting into.
